{"id":135638,"date":"2022-09-19T23:22:56","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T23:22:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/freshestfm.com\/new-line-cinema-abandoned-iron-man-movie-because-he-was-too-heavy-to-fly\/"},"modified":"2022-09-19T23:23:07","modified_gmt":"2022-09-19T23:23:07","slug":"new-line-cinema-abandoned-iron-man-movie-because-he-was-too-heavy-to-fly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/freshestfm.com\/new-line-cinema-abandoned-iron-man-movie-because-he-was-too-heavy-to-fly\/","title":{"rendered":"New Line Cinema Abandoned Iron Man Movie Because He \u2018Was Too Heavy to Fly\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Before the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/tag\/marvel-cinematic-universe\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a> launched in 2008 with the release of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/tag\/iron-man\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Iron Man<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0the movie rights for\u00a0the character\u00a0were turned down by New Line Cinema, which had acquired the rights from Fox in 2000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/warner-bros-discovery-has-bigger-problems-than-its-dc-search-1235221804\/amp\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>\u00a0source, New Line opted not to pursue Tony Stark\u2019s story\u00a0because\u00a0Bob Shaye, who ran the studio at the time, argued \u201cthat it didn\u2019t make sense because Iron Man was too heavy to fly.\u201d Although the project was already in the early stages of development, New Line let the rights expire.\u00a0Marvel reacquired them in 2005, and today the MCU has banked $27.4 billion at the box office.<\/p>\n<p>David Hayter, a screenwriter whom New Line enlisted to develop<em> Iron Man<\/em> in the mid-2000s, shed more light on the shelved project during a 2018 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/iron-man-movie-happened-before-robert-downey-jr-1107846\/\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> with the <em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very unusual, and it kind of felt like they were developing the screenplay for a lot less than it would cost them typically to develop a screenplay,\u201d explained Hayter,\u00a0who wrote the first two<em> X-Men <\/em>films in 2000 and 2003, as well as <em>Watchmen<\/em> in \u201909. \u201cBut they paid us and then they hired me at the end of it to write the script, so it was great. It was very cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"suitcase-ad\" \/>\n<p>\u201cIt was very much the corporate reshuffling that kept the New Line version from being made, but I think New Line recognized as well as anybody the value of this character,\u201d the writer (and prolific <em>Metal Gear Solid<\/em>\u00a0voice actor) said. \u201c<em>X-Men<\/em> helped break open the door for heroes that weren\u2019t Superman or Batman. And <em>Iron Man<\/em> just seemed to be the next logical step. It\u2019s just so fun and action-packed. It perfectly fit where CG effects were at the time.
