Wrestling Dad Arrested After Attacking Son’s Opponent at High School Tournament

Written by on January 21, 2020

In a scene far more in line with the WWE’s brand of wrestling than, say, the type of wrestling you would see at high schools worldwide, a pissed off dad stormed the mat to tackle his son’s opponent after his kid was violently hurled to the ground with an illegal move.

Here, check it out. This would fit almost anyone’s definition of “bananas”:

This chaotic scene took place during a tournament in Kannapolis, North Carolina. According to FOX 8 that father, 54-year-old Barry Lee Jones, was arrested and charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct on Saturday. He was processed at the local county jail, and got a $1,000 secured bond.

Fox 8 adds that his son’s opponent was not injured.

Reporter Rachel Lundberg said on Twitter that he’s due in court in March:

Neither the wrestling coach nor principal for the blindsided student’s school wanted to comment when reached by Fox 8. But Sharon Contreras, the Superintendent of Schools for Guilford County, which oversees the school of that wrestler, did issue a statement.

“It’s very unfortunate, and it just shows a society that I feel sometimes we’re just losing all decorum,” Contreras said. “I want to say that the parents from that high school wrote us a lovely letter saying they were equally appalled. It’s not who they are as a community. And I certainly apologize to the students at both high schools who experienced that, particularly the student who was attacked.”

Oh, and if you’re wondering what happened after the above camera lost sight of the events, a local news station (WXII 12 News) showed the arrested parent being subdued by another guy.

Uh, not to be encouraging. But let’s just say this wasn’t exactly the most boring high school sporting event ever.
