‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Dips 83 Percent in Box Office for Second Friday

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is having another troubling week in the U.S. box office.
After debuting at No. 2 with a take of $33 million, the worst premiere for X-Men franchise history, its second Friday didn’t fare any better. From Friday to Friday, the box office numbers dropped 83 percent, dipping to $2.348 million, according to Forbes. That’s the biggest week-to-week drop for a comic book superhero movie in history.
The $200 million movie did slightly better overseas during opening weekend, where it earned $107 million from 53 international markets, according to Variety. It had a global debut of $140 million.
The film’s director, Simon Kinberg, wants to take full blame for it not living up to its commercial and critical expectations.
“I’m here and I’m saying when a movie doesn’t work, put it on me,” Kinberg said on the KCRW podcast The Business. “I’m the writer/director of the movie, the movie didn’t connect with audiences, that’s on me.”
Dark Phoenix currently has a 24 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s failures seem to affect Kinberg more because he had such a good time making the film with the cast.
“I loved making the movie,” he said, “and I loved the people I made the movie with.”
Dark Phoenix stars Sophie Turner, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender.
