‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Has Worst Opening in Franchise History

Written by on June 8, 2019

Dark Phoenix is the most disliked X-Men film, according to Rotten Tomatoes. It’s also on pace to get the unfortunate distinction of having the lowest-opening weekend for the mutant franchise.

The Disney-Fox film only grossed $14 million on its opening day, according to Variety. That puts the movie’s projection to $34 million before the weekend closes. The previous lowest-earning opening, 2013’s The Wolverine, grossed nearly $20 million more during its debut.

Dark Phoenix‘s numbers only takes the domestic performance into account, as it’s yet to open in foreign markets where it’s traditionally been more successful. Still, it’s doubtful the studio will recoup the nearly $200 million it cost to produce the film.

This week’s box office champion was Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets 2. In its three-day total, the animated comedy earned $46.1 million. Yet, like Dark Phoenix, this was significantly lower than estimated by critics.

After topping sales last weekend, Godzilla: King of the Monsters came in second, grossing $14.7 million. This is almost a 70 percent drop from the $47.7 million it earned when it hit theaters last weekend. Disney’s Aladdin came in third with $24 million.

Disney will probably still end the month on a high note, with Toy Story 4 dropping on June 20. This sets the stage for The Lion King. The remake, which premieres on July 19, features the voiceover talents of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, and Beyoncé.
