Yankees GM Brian Cashman Stopped at Gunpoint After Being Mistaken for Car Thief

Written by on August 10, 2019

Yankees senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman started off his weekend with a scary run-in with the police.

On Friday, Cashman told the New York Post that his car was surrounded by a swarm of officers at a Darien, Connecticut gas station.

“I had a welcoming committee descend upon me as I pulled out of that gas station,” Cashman told the Post

According to Cashman, the police were “responding to someone in a white Jeep that was brandishing a gun in a local doctor’s office,” which led them to run his plates while he was getting gas.

Cashman had his white Jeep Wrangler stolen from him last Saturday. Earlier in the following week, police located Cashman’s car abandoned in the Bronx and returned it to the Yankees’ executive. Cashman was on the way to take his car to the Norwalk Police Department to have the vehicle processed for evidence when he was stopped by the Darien officers. His car had not been taken off the NYPD’s list of stolen vehicles when they ran the plates.

When Cashman started to pull out of the gas station, his five police cars surrounded his car. ix to nine officers approached his Jeep with their “guns drawn.”

“They executed a very tactful interception,” Cashman said. “They’re clearly very professional and trained and they asked me to turn my car off, exit the vehicle, walk backwards towards them…they were executing their duty.”

Cashman was told to “not make any rash movements” as he exited the Jeep. They then searched his car and asked for his identification. The ordeal took 15 minutes before Cashman was eventually escorted to the Norwalk Police Department, according to his account.
