Young Thug, an artist known for defying gender norms, is receiving backlash over a tweet that has been deemed transphobic.
The ATL rapper was addressing Dwyane Wade‘s 12-year-old daughter, Zaya, who recently came out as transgender. Thugger began his ill-conceived message by misgendering the child, and went on to suggest Zaya was going against god’s will by living her truth.
“All I wanna say to [Wade’s] son is: ‘GOD DON’T MAKE MISTAKES,'” he tweeted. “But hey, live your true self.”
Thug’s statement left Twitter users divided. Some fans called on the rapper to immediately delete the post to avoid getting canceled, while others immediately began labeling Thug transphobic and misogynistic.
Boosie Badazz also caught heat this week for criticizing Wade’s support for his transgender daughter. Boosie posted a video in which he continued to refer to Zaya as a male and claimed she was too young to identify as transgender.
“I gotta say something about this shit, bro. Dwyane Wade, you gone too fucking far, dawg,” the rapper said. “That is a male. A 12-year-old. At 12, they don’t even know what they next meal gon’ be. They don’t have shit figured out yet. He might meet a woman, anything, at 16 and fall in love with her. But his dick be gone—how he gon’—like, bruh, you going too far, dawg.”
Wade and the rest of his family have stood by Zaya’s side since her decision to come out. Her older brother, Zaire, penned a heartfelt message last week, expressing support for his sister/best friend.
“We did everything together…we fought, we played, we laughed and we cried. But the one thing we never did was leave each other behind,” he wrote. “I’ve told you that I would lay my life down to make sure you are ten toes down and happy on this earth. I don’t care what they think Z, you are my best friend and I love you kid, and if it means anything, just know there’s no love lost on this side.”
